Our Responsible Sourcing Practices
Mazahri is strongly committed to responsible sourcing practices. We only engage with suppliers that align with our human rights-based business approach. We care about the materials we use, where those materials come from, how they are sourced, and the impact of that sourcing on people and the planet.
Specifically:
We are committed to sourcing our jewelry materials from artisanal and small-scale miners (ASM) who earn fair wages and are subject to fair labor practices, proper health and safety standards, and environmental protections. We have zero tolerance for exploitative practices aimed at ASM or local mining communities and refuse to work with suppliers displacing or in any way exploiting local and original inhabitants of mining communities. Mining is a main form of income generation for many people in the global south and we believe the original guardians of those resources should benefit equally from the wealth generated by their mined materials.
We are a Fairmined licensed brand and exclusively use Fairmined certified gold. Fairmined is an assurance label that certifies gold from empowered responsible ASM organizations. The Fairmined initiative was created by the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM), a globally recognized leader and pioneer in its support of responsible practices for ASM.
We source all of our colored gemstones from reliable, responsible and ethical suppliers working with ASM in the global south including in Sri Lanka, Brazil, Liberia, Viet Nam, Tanzania, and Afghanistan. It is our goal to help grow a more reliable and responsible sourcing channel from Afghanistan in the future. We prioritize cutting and polishing of stones in the countries where they are mined in order to increase value of the finished stone kept in country and also to reduce transportation waste.
Currently, we use only Canadamark diamonds because of traceability issues but we are working to locate responsibly mined and traceable ASM diamonds to use in the future.
All of our jewelry is made to order to ensure lower levels of waste, unused materials and excess stock. We also time gemstone orders to decrease environmental waste related to shipping and our overall carbon footprint. For these reasons, please expect an 8-12 week completion time for each order placed. We strive to have your pieces completed earlier and will attempt to accommodate urgent requests if needed. Please contact us before placing your order if you have a time-sensitive request or require additional assistance.
Our packaging is produced in collaboration with local artisans in Afghanistan using traditional methods of wood carving and silk weaving. We work with Turquoise Mountain, a nonprofit, and Zarif, a small-business, both of whom are committed to improving the lives of artisans, supporting their human rights, engaging in fair labor practices, proper health and safety procedures and sustainable environmental standards.
